Clarksville, Ark. – In front of an electric crowd, the Eagles put on a show in their season-opener against Oklahoma Northern College crushing the Mavericks 51-0 on Saturday.
The Eagles displayed dominance throughout the day winning all ten matches behind a large and vocal home crowd. Regionally ranked
Shelton Chastain started the match with a fall in the 125-pound bout. Freshman
Javin Douglas followed with a tech fall at 133. Another freshman,
Luke Adams, kept the momentum of the match in favor of the Eagles with a fall at 141. At 149, veteran
Hayden Rofkahr won in a decision, 11-4. Newcomer
Demetri Teddlie quickly put his opponent on the mat with a fall at 157.
Airamis Mendoza, who is regionally ranked at 165, posted a major decision. At 174, senior
Gabriel Sheikh had a fall, and
RC Morris followed with fall at 184.
Iyanuoluwa Akingbolagun kept the Eagles crowd vocal with another fall in the 197 fight. In the heavyweight clash, Phillip Saenz Jr. grinded out a decision (5-3).
"We had a great day today", said head coach
Vinny Barber. "It was a great environment with all the fans and the tailgating. Winning all ten matches was a culmination of all the hard work by the guys. Overall, I was really proud of the team and thought they did an awesome job today."
In addition to the dominant win, the Eagles also received their 2024 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship rings in a celebration ceremony at the match.
