Women's Tennis Opens Season On The Road

Texarkana, Texas - The University of the Ozarks women's tennis team opened the spring season opener East Texas Baptist University (7-0) and dropped a 7-0 decision to Texas A&M University–Texarkana (7-0) on February 17 in Texarkana, Texas.

East Texas Baptist controlled the match from the outset, sweeping both doubles contests to claim the opening point before capturing all six singles matches to complete the shutout victory.

In doubles play, the ETBU pairing of Fernanda Ruiz Burkha and Monique Ybarra secured a 6-2 win at No. 1 over Kelsey Smith and Madison Hamilton. At No. 2 doubles, Neyna Gonzalez and Alexis Stong defeated Jayden Vazquez and Erika Jones 6-1 to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.

The Tigers carried that momentum into singles competition, earning straight-set victories across the lineup. Fernanda Ruiz Burkha posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kelsey Smith at No. 1, while Isabella Macquet defeated Madison Hamilton 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Jaz Ford-Schartner, Neyna Gonzalez, and Alexis Stong each earned 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 3–5, respectively. East Texas Baptist picked up the final point at No. 6 singles by forfeit.

Texas A&M–Texarkana claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The duo of Ana Gonzalez and Zahra Dreyer-Ferreir earned a 6-0 victory over Kelsey Smith and Madison Hamilton at the top position, while Lucia Siddens and Andrea Castillo posted a 6-0 win against Erika Jones and Jayden Vazquez at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished.

In singles action, Texas A&M–Texarkana secured straight-set victories across the lineup. Ana Gonzalez defeated Kelsey Smith 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Emma Besi topped Madison Hamilton 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Lucia Siddens, Zahra Dreyer-Ferreir, and Maryam Awais each recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 3–5, respectively, while Andrea Castillo picked up the final point at No. 6 by forfeit.

The Eagles will travel to Conway for a match against Hendrix College February 28.
