Jackson, Miss. - The University of the Ozarks women's tennis team earned its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Belhaven University on Thursday in Jackson, Mississippi.
Ozarks secured the match behind a strong showing in singles play, winning four of the six matches. Kelsey Smith set the tone at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Millie Gallarno. Madison Hamilton followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Evey Moore at No. 3 singles, while Jayden Vazquez added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Arica Eason at the No. 4 position.
Ozarks also picked up two points by forfeit at No. 5 and No. 6 singles as Yamileth Lopez and Emerson Corbin were awarded victories.
Belhaven earned its two points in the doubles matches. Gallarno teamed with a partner to defeat Vazquez and Lopez 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Moore and Eason edged Emerson Corbin and Samantha Naramore 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.
With the win, Ozarks improves to 1-3 on the season, while Belhaven falls to 0-8. The Eagles will remain in Mississippi for matches against Milsaps College and Blue Mountain College March 6.
