THE BASICS
Clarksville, Ark. – University of St. Thomas escaped with a drama-filled 68-65 win after a furious Eagles comeback on Friday night. St. Thomas held a 33-27 halftime lead, but had a strong third quarter to push to a 56-41 lead heading into the fourth. After an emotional-filled third quarter, the Eagles stormed back in the final ten minutes of action.
Addison Pontiff and
Lila Hartness hit back-to-back three-pointers early in the fourth. But St. Thomas rallied back for a 14-point lead at the 7:03 mark. The Eagles then went on a 11-0 run to trim the deficit to 62-59 with 4:26 remaining. An
Elli Garcia layup later made it a two-point game and after a St. Thomas bucket,
Abby Beene drilled a three-pointer to pull the Eagles within 66-65. The Eagles would force a turnover on the next possession with less than 30 seconds to play. The Eagles had a couple of chances in the final seconds to tie or take the lead, but came up empty.
Kennedi Wight drilled 4-of-8 three-pointers and scored 20 points to lead the Eagles. Wight also pulled down ten rebounds to record a double-double.
TURNING POINT
St. Thomas held off a furious Eagles rally in the fourth quarter and never let go of the lead. After trailing by 14 points with 7:03 remaining in the game, the Eagles would pull within one point, but that would be as close as they could get.
TIP-INS
Kennedi Wight recorded her first double-double of the season scoring 20 points and pulling down ten rebounds. Wight hit 4-of-8 from the three-point line.
