THE BASICS
Memphis, Tenn. – Rhodes College pulled off a 65-64 upset over the Eagles on Sunday afternoon in Memphis after making a pair of free throws with just seconds remaining. The Eagles trailed after the first, second and third quarters, but made a late push in the game. Trailing 49-41 heading into the fourth, the Eagles battled back to trim the deficit to 53-47 with 6:50 left on
Abby Beene's three-point play.
Dalena Fisher made a layup and
Naomi Smith hit two free throws to put the Eagles within 55-52 at the 3:59 mark. Rhodes would claim a 63-58 advantage with just 13 seconds left, but Beene drilled a three-pointer. Smith scored on a layup and was fouled after a Rhodes' turnover. Smith sank the free throw and the Eagles went ahead 64-63. However, Rhodes hit a pair of clutch free throws with two seconds left to secure the game. Smith led the Eagles with 24 points and eight rebounds.
