Box Score 2 Clarksville, Ark. - Schreiner University broke open a tight game with a pair of late-inning rallies and held off a persistent Ozarks comeback attempt to earn a 9-6 win on Thursday afternoon in game one of the series.
Schreiner struck first in the opening inning, but the Eagles answered immediately as Taber Childs launched a solo home run to even the score at 1-1.
Trailing, the Eagles battled back in the fifth. Joseph Coon led off the inning with a solo homer, and Connor Reed later tied the game with an RBI single, making it 3-3.
Both teams traded home runs in the sixth inning in a back-and-forth battle. Michael White connected on a two-run homer to knot the game at 5-5.
The game turned in the seventh inning. Schreiner loaded the bases and capitalized with a run-scoring walk by Shawn Rivera, followed by a sacrifice fly from Blake Juarez to regain the lead at 7-5.
The Eagles trimmed the deficit to one in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Michlitsch, but Schreiner created breathing room in the ninth with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 9-6.
The Eagles finished with 12 hits in the loss, highlighted by home runs from Childs, Coon, and White.
Game Two
Schreiner responded to a late Ozarks rally with two runs in the 10th inning to secure a 6-4 extra-inning victory in game two.
Schreiner struck first in the opening inning to give the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead.
Ozarks answered in the second as Langdon Townsend launched a solo home run to even the score at 1-1.
The game remained tight through the middle innings behind strong starting pitching. Schreiner regained the lead in the sixth when Alejandro Gonzalez singled home a run, and the Mountaineers added two more in the seventh on another clutch two-RBI single from Gonzalez to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Eagles mounted its best rally in the ninth inning. Brett Burks drove in a run on a groundout before Joseph Coon followed with an RBI single. Taber Childs then delivered a go-ahead RBI single to cap a three-run surge, giving Ozarks a 4-3 advantage and putting Schreiner on the brink.
However, Schreiner responded in the 10th with a pair of runs.
The Eagles was paced by Gabriel Ellison's three-hit performance, while Townsend provided the early spark with his home run.
Schreiner finished with 11 hits and capitalized on key opportunities late, while the Eagles totaled eight hits in the loss.
The Eagles and Schreiner will finish their series tomorrow with a single game at 1:00 p.m.
